Route Description:
Route Type:
The challenge of the Satellite is the measure of restraint you show in the opening stages. It is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security as you take a relaxed cadence along the beautiful Magaliesburg and Hartbeespoort country roads. Here the pace is quick on good road surfaces.

The first five kilometres are fast, downhill and quite exhilarating followed by 20 kilometres of gentle, gradual gradient to the Broederstroom T-junction. The charm and beauty of Hartebeestpoort Dam will always impress even the most focussed. Peacanwood Estate comes and goes, as does the majestic view of the Magalies Park Golf course. The hills are low in intensity, the riding fast.

There is stern climbing in the second half, with a steady uphill pull that will prove enjoyable as you head to Hekpoort. It is here, around the 85-kilometre mark, that your early discretion will be rewarded. The notorious Hekpoort Pass is tough, a long five-kilometre slog. Traditionally, the winning break occurs at this point. Once over Hekpoort there is a nice long, refreshing downhill to recover. Take a hard left into Broederstroom Road and begin the return journey. There may be a fair challenge here, for the wind is usually against you and then there is the last little irritation of Poeierbult Hill.

The downhill finish is fast back into the Satellite station and clearly marked. All in all this is a very challenging but enjoyable route, very scenic and safe from City traffic congestion. For those looking for a shorter ride, be warned, Hekpoort is also on your agenda.
